Building level decking designs is never hard. Make sure that you prepare the ground first of all, the aim is to get everything nicely flat. If you are building you decking on a lawn then you might want to lay paving slabs on a bed of gravel first to avoid your deck from sinking over time. A weed proof membrane is a good idea, you don't want your decking designs ruined by weeds that will surely come. At this point be sure to treat the timber you are going to use and make sure you buy the right type of screw, don't cut costs, we want to do this job right.

Create Your Basic Decking Designs

Magformers Square 6 Piece Set

STEP 1: Lay out the main frame and butt join at the corners. Be sure to fix the structure with 150 mm (6 inches) outdoor use screws from the outside of the frame. To keep the corners of the frame at a perfect right angle (we are assuming your decking designs will be a simple perfect square) use a batten brace fixed with screws (a piece of wood you place across the corners to make a triangle shape ) Use the proportions of 3:4:5, i.e. if one side of the triangle is 30 cm, the other straight side will be 40cm and the main slant of the triangle will be 50cms.

The Secrets of Laying Your Ground Level Decking Designs

STEP 2: Start marking points where you will put the struts that will run horizontally across the square shape of your decking designs. Next attach these struts with our trusty 150mm (6-inches) screws to the outside of the frame.

Prepare your Decking Designs

STEP 3: Mark where your decking design will sit then put it aside for a moment. Strip the soil where you are going to place your decking designs and put a paving slab at each corner and on the main pressure points where the deck is going to sit. So for a square design you will most likely end up with a 9 paving slab grid. With these in place take away the paving slabs one by one and remove 25mm (1-inches) of topsoil from beneath he paving slab. Replace this earth with gravel and level out. Repeat for all your paving slabs.

STEP 4: At this point in the process you want to take out your trusty Spirit level and place it across two of the slabs, ideally buy one that is long enough or place a piece of flat wood beneath it. If your slabs are not even, then remove more soil as desired and add more gravel. We want our decking designs to be perfectly even when set. Once all your slabs are even cover the area in weed proof membrane and cut out squares where the paving slabs are, trim and tidy then cover the membrane itself with gravel, removing any gravel that might spill over your paving slabs.

STEP 5:Now it's time to put back the decking frame and start adding the boards. For decking designs set against a house wall, like for a patio or porch, start furthest away from this wall. Position your first board along the deck's edge, making sure it is flush with the framework's edge. Next its time to fix the deck using two decking screws 10mm (2-inches) in from the board edge. Once the first board is in place add the next. Be sure to use either a screw or a piece of small wood off cuts to leave a small gap between the boards. The gap can be to your liking, one recommendation is around 2-10 mm (about quarter of an inch). Continue placing the boards one after another.

STEP 6: The last board will probably need to be cut along its length, when you do this it is recommended that you brush on a preservative to treat the edge from the rain and weather that effects it over the years. Slot the last board into place and finally cover the bearer framework and the board edges with a fascia or treated timber so there are no open gaps for creatures to make homes in. Stand back and admire your work.

This plan is for a simple square design, after you conquer this, it's time to take your decking designs further and try various other shapes and combination of shapes. A clear pattern and its repetition, taking great care and consideration as to how the various elements will connect together can make some outstanding decking designs that will really make your garden stand out.
